Conversation with the “Business Doctor” — The Journey of a Business Enthusiast
I’ve always taken pride in my passion for understanding how businesses work and how every aspect of strategy and process comes together to create a product or service that meets a need. Nothing in my world beats progressing from the idea stage to successfully entering the market.
My drive for this feeling changed when I encountered a statement in James Clear’s book Atomic Habits: “Business is a never-ending quest to deliver the same result in an easier fashion.” This statement deeply resonated with me and felt like the ultimate truth in my world and how I perceive business.
This simple yet powerful statement has become the foundation of my approach to business and how I tackle business-related challenges when working on a project.
Today, I’m a business consultant and asked myself, “How did it all start?”
Early Experiences in the Grocery Store
I was a young boy whose parents planned to make an engineer out of him, but life had other plans (Just thinking about it makes me laugh). We had a grocery store, and every day after school, I was always available to help my mom with sales and errands, but I was terrible at keeping records of the sales, and it made my parents unhappy; out of anger, my father made a statement, “I don’t think you will make it in business.” At that point, my Journey as a business enthusiast started, and ever since, I have constantly put myself in positions where I will learn and better understand how a business works.
Involvement in Enactus
At the beginning of my second year at the University of Port Harcourt, I decided to join Enactus, a decision that changed my life forever. In less than seven months, I became the Enactus Team, Uniport Chapter project manager. For two years, we worked on several community projects that made me understand what it means to identify a problem and develop a sustainable solution strategically relevant to the development of the community of focus and in line with the UN SDGs. “Clean Water For All” (A filtration system designed to provide clean water for communities lacking clean water) and Choko-Oven (A System that helps women in Bayelsa grill fish without exposure to carcinogenic substances in other smoked fish) are some of the notable projects I was privileged to oversee
I felt elevated above my peers, giving me the confidence to start a business while in school. It failed, and I went on to develop two other failed business ventures (Surprisingly, I wasn’t discouraged). I met like-minded people and read stories of entrepreneurs, which gave me the confidence to keep trying and failing fast.
The Transition To Business Consulting
In 2017, I met Avis Charles, founder of Fuspay, a remarkable entrepreneur I admired and wanted to work with to learn how to stop failing. I became a project manager for his consulting company, Cosmotran Global (now Fuspay Technology). I worked closely with him for three years. At that time, I was already managing/overseeing over ten projects that cut across several industries like FMCGs, FinTech, Agriculture, ICT, Marketing, Travel and Hospitality. Notable projects such as Godou Foods, The Nairabet Rebranding Project, and Fuspay gave me the experience needed to kickstart my Journey as a business consultant.
In December 2021, I entered business consulting, and it has been a fantastic journey. I have worked on several projects with remarkable founders and entrepreneurs, transforming the business ecosystem and the “never-ending quest to deliver the same result in an easier fashion.”
Lessons Learned on the Way (Uncommon Truths)
- It is okay to fail as often as possible, but never intentionally repeat your mistakes.
- Learning happens along the way.
- A healthy relationship with like-minded individuals should be a priority.
- A mentor is slightly more important than a “Great Idea.”
- Implementation and scalability should always be in your mind. If it isn’t easy to implement and scalable, let it go.
